Bob’s first-ever appearance at a dinner led to an actor telling him he had “good timing”. It has since become the most frequent compliment he receives.
He was especially touched when he appeared at a function with Dame Thora Hird, Patricia Routledge and Dame Peggy Mount. All three told him what good timing he had.
“I felt quite emotional when Peggy Mount said it to me” he said. “She was another of my heroes when I was growing up but by now she was blind although, remarkably, still performing. I don’t mind admitting I had tears in my eyes when she congratulated me.”
Bob made a promotional film with Arthur Lowe and ended up writing some of the script. He became friends with the Dad’s Army legend and worked with him several times.
